AFC's History
1960s
Foundations
The first Chinese Christian Fellowship (CCF) was founded in 1961 at the University of Winnipeg by a group of international students from Hong Kong. 5 years later, AFC hosted their first Winter Conference in Banff, where Chinese students from across the country gathered. At this time, there were only 40 Chinese churches across the country.

1970s
Early Formation
By 1972, AFC was officially registered as a charity. Led Rev. Stephen and Edith Knights, former missionaries in China, many of the students from these years still consider them their spiritual parents. In 1972, Teens Conference (TC) was hosted for the first time. In 1976, the AFC Gospel Book House was opened to provide Chinese language Christian literature.

1980s
Shifts and Growth
Chinese immigration patterns continued to shift and grow. New CCFs continued to expand across the country. Additionally, the first English TC was hosted, in recognition of the growing 2nd generation Chinese Canadian youth population.

1990s
Innovations
In the 90s, an AFC Vancouver office was established, where there was an emphasis on utilizing the arts and new technologies. Due to an increase of immigrants from mainland China, the first Mandarin TC was hosted.

2000s
Building Bridges
This decade brought forth Pyros Magazine (a Christian magazine for Chinese youth), Gospel music competitions, a high school drop-in centre, and the creation of a sports league. Our annual Frosh ConneXion was started by students who recognized the need to bridge high school and post-secondary communities.

2010s
Spreading Out
Various events like Integrity Dare (high school event) and Campus Builders (Mandarin version of Campus Challenge) were started. CCFs were now available in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin across various campuses.

2020s
A Time of Renewal
COVID forced quick adaptation for Teens Conference and Campus Challenge, which were held entirely online, only coming back in-person in 2022. The 2020s has been a time of renewal with an internship program and new pathways to join our growing staff team. Strategic partnerships have allowed us to participate in missions locally and overseas. And in 2025, we rolled out a new brand look to take us into an exciting future.
